hairdressingWho is it for?

This is a qualification suitable for any person who wants a basic insight into the hairdressing industry.


See the list of units below. The student is allocated to an assessor at Mode’s training centre who will carry out the student’s assessments, set targets, provide support and monitor their progress.

How many credits must be achieved?

Students must achieve a minimum of 20 credits.  The students must achieve 14 credits from the mandatory units and 6 credits from the optional units:

Mandatory units:

  • Unit G20 Make sure own actions reduce risks to health and safety. 5 credits
  • Unit G3 Contribute to the development of effective working relationships. 3 credits
  • Unit GH1 Shampoo and condition hair. 4 credits
  • Unit GH3 Prepare for hair services and maintain work areas. 2 credits

Optional units
The assessor and student review the optional units available and between them agree the best units for the student to complete. This will depend on the student’s interests and any prior experience. Options include:

  • Unit G2 Assist with salon reception duties
  • Unit GH2 Blow dry hair
  • Unit GH4 Assist with hair colouring services
  • Unit GH5 Assist with perming hair services
  • Unit GH6 Plait and twist hair using basic techniques
  • Unit GH7 Remove hair extensions
  • Unit GB Assist with shaving services

Entry requirements

There are no entry requirements for this qualification.


The course duration is flexible, depending on:

  • any prior experience, knowledge and qualifications the student has
  • the amount of days the student can attend Mode’s training centre
  • the outcome of the student’s initial assessments


This course is funded and upon application your eligibility will be assessed.


On completion of this the student will be able to carry out basic hairdressing services.  They can progress on to the NVQ Level 2 Diploma in hairdressing.
