Course content

Skills are developed by practicing in a commercial barber shop or hair salon with genuine clients during the working day. The apprentice also attends off-the-job training sessions. To complete the qualification, students must demonstrate competence across a variety of tasks, details of these are below.

Greeting clients; consultation with client; shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp; cutting hair using barbering techniques to create a variety of looks; style and finish men’s hair; cut facial hair into shape; provide shaving services.

• Apprentices are employed by a local salon or barber shop and receive a wage
• Training is a mix of practical on-the-job, and off-the-job training
• Tutors from Mode provide ongoing support and assessment to students throughout their course, and this includes additional training in English and Maths if necessary

Costs and funding

This course costs £3000. The costs of training and assessment are paid for in full with government funding for 16 to 18 year olds. Costs are also covered for 19 to 24 year olds with an Education Health & Care Plan. There is a contribution from employers for apprentices who fall out of these categories. The course can also be paid for privately.
